一百多年前，江南林家的祖先辗转坎坷来到台湾岛，江南从此在这里定居。在20世纪初，林家两辈从医。祖父精通中医，他的儿子林汉敏擅长西医外科。汉敏平日里在日本人八重开设的诊所内上班。某晚，汉敏的妻子（蒋雯丽 饰）待产，主刀医生八重却醉卧斗室。手足无措的汉敏只得硬着头皮为妻子剖腹。1928年4月9日，就在台湾被日本侵占的第33个年头，林家迎来了新的生命。而他们一家人，也注定在这纷乱时代中经历无数的悲欢离合……本片为中国人民抗日战争胜利58周年、台湾光复58周年纪念作品，并荣获2004年北京大学生电影节评委会最佳导演奖、2003年金鸡奖最佳电影音乐奖、2004年华表奖最佳女主角（蒋雯丽）和最佳导演奖。
