故事发生在1977年的法国，中文线a站罗伯特（法布莱斯·鲁奇尼 Fabrice Luchini 饰）是一位作风十分独断专行的工厂老板，中文线a站他不仅对手下的工人们十分严格苛刻，在家庭里亦是一位不折不扣的“大丈夫”。长久以来的压迫令工人们愤怒的呼号声到达了顶峰，他们举行了规模浩大的罢工示威，他们要更少的工作和更多的薪水，还逼迫罗伯特下台。就在这个节骨眼上，罗伯特那平日里默默无闻的妻子苏珊娜（凯瑟琳·德纳芙 Catherine Deneuve 饰）站了出来，她不仅利用自己灵活的社交手腕安抚了工人们的愤怒，甚至让他们乖乖的回到了各自的工作岗位之上。在苏珊娜的领导之下，工厂恢复了生产，工人们的工作条件得到了改善，然而，对于这一切，此时正在外地疗养的罗伯特一无所知。
