本片是一部传记体爱情史诗故事片。影片撷取了李富春、左右蔡畅爱情生活中最具华彩的段落，左右浓墨重彩地浓缩了一对久经考验的老革命家生死与共的感情历程。 李富春是新中国经济建设的奠基人之一，曾任中共中央政治局常委。20世纪50年代，他曾在新中国与前苏联签署的《关于苏维埃社会主义共和国联盟政府援助中华人民共和国政府发展中国国民经济的协定》中做出过重大贡献。蔡畅则是中华人民共和国第一位妇联主席，国际民主妇女联合会副主席，曾任全国人大副委员长。两人同为20世纪同龄人，同在巴黎加入中国共产党并结为伴侣，共同经历了53年的风风雨雨。 影片从李富春和蔡畅在法国留学生活开始，通过法国巴黎的浪漫恋情；香港白色恐怖的生死考验；东北战场的聚散离别；文革期间的相濡以沫及临终决别的感慨万千，描写了他们由相识、相知、相爱，到相勉、相助、相慰，同志结成同盟，夫妻恩爱相伴的光辉灿烂而又充满激情的一生……
