故事发生在一座小渔村内，国产鱼王老鳗鲡的女儿陆小妹（百灵 饰）进城打工，国产却因为土里土气而遭到了城里人的嘲笑，在误打误撞之下，陆小妹结识了名为许彦的男子，两人之间结下了友谊。老鳗鲡强迫陆小妹嫁给她的表哥，虽然陆小妹心里有一百个不愿意，但是却不敢违抗父令。菊花是陆小妹的好友，一次偶然中，她解释了外号花脚蚊子的青工，两人坠入了情网。可是，这段感情并没有一个好的结果，花脚蚊子最终抛弃了菊花，导致菊花只能下嫁给又穷又丑的金根。菊花的遭遇让陆小妹内心里百感杂陈，她决定不屈服于命运的安排，选择向许彦求助。

It is more memorable than Julien Duvivier's earlier silent version of 1925, also named Poil de Carotte.The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have been discovered whilst walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally captivating and the film made him an instant star, launching what looked like becoming a very promising film career – until he was shot dead whilst fighting against the Germans in 1944. Harry Baur, a legendary stage and film actor (who also died during World War II, allegedly at the hands of the Gestapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconciliation between father and son at the end of the film provides its most enduring image, enough to melt the heart of all but the most stoical of spectators.
