本剧讲述一个在动荡时代发生的可歌可泣的故事，最污一个在黑暗中燃亮中国人心灵的爱国青年，最污荡气回肠，感人肺腑。热心革命青年人，为国家大义，不惜牺牲一切。男主角容亨（潘志文饰）抵北京后，巧遇其姐容达（鲍起静饰）与姐夫梁节操（王伟饰），而亨此行乃代表南方政府为谈判事而来，为了解北京实况，往访任教于北京大学的顾学儒（刘纬民饰），得学儒之邀加入国事研究社，并得学生周启华（刘松仁饰）为私人助理。亨应邀到北京大学演讲，邂逅上海大亨之女施婷婷（米雪饰），婷婷初与启华相好，但遇上亨后，便对启华冷淡，启华无奈，唯决意退出情场，寄情于学运与革命事业。南北政府谈判破裂，亨被勒令离境，却暗中潜回，于幕后策动五四运动，深得启华及大部分学生支持，亨行踪被节操发现，遂设计捕亨。亨被判死刑，幸得婷婷及其父之助，得免死，改判终身监禁；而达与节操亦为此事夫妻反目。众人为了营救亨，牵引也一串串故事。
