本片根据真实案件改编，新宿小偷讲述一个1942年美国路易斯安那州一个因美貌而被指控谋杀的女人，新宿小偷在漫长的审判期间如何在一位神父的帮助下保持希望和平静。电影以历史案件和2005年出版的小说为蓝本拍摄，导演TomAnton和妻子SandiRussell共同撰写剧本并监制。夫妇俩都是狂热影迷，在成为电影制作人之前TomAnton干了二十年的环境咨询。虽然他们的第一部电影《最终》票房惨败，但八年后两人又携《赦免》杀回电影圈。影片配乐由艾美奖得主阿什利·欧文打造，与精美的服装布景很好地融为一体。

Despite enjoying his work, photography (especially of the female form) and drumming, Crane wanted to be a movie star.
