1941年，春暖侵华日军向抗日根据地发起了疯狂的“扫荡”和“清乡”，春暖同时，蒋介石制造了震惊中外的皖南事变，掀起了第二次“反共”高潮。中国人民的抗日战争进入了最困难的时期。为了打破侵华日军的进攻和国民党的经济封锁所造成的极大困难，中国共产党领导的陕甘宁边区政府，号召边区军民“一边战斗、一边生产”，开展了轰轰烈烈的大生产运动。在“南泥湾”，一群来自五湖四海的中华儿女，创造了一个令世人赞叹的奇迹，谱写了一首壮丽的革命史诗。本片讲述的就是1941年春，八路军一二0师三五九旅长兼政委王震的率领下，连长老周（任帅 饰）奉命开进南泥湾，披荆斩棘，战胜重重困难，将荒无人烟的南泥湾建设成了“平川稻谷香，肥鸭遍池塘。到处是庄稼，遍地是牛羊”的陕北好江南。影片以一名八路军女战士“苗子”（彭丹 饰）的日记和心路历程为线索，描述了在那段激情燃烧的岁月里，在轰轰烈烈的大生产运动中，杂糅了革命英雄主义与浪漫主义的战地爱情故事。
