1949年，亚洲我人民解放军响应毛主席“打过长江去，亚洲解放全中国”的号召，砺兵秣马，准备横渡长江。大军渡江之前，特派李连长（孙道临 饰）带领一个侦察班先行渡江了解敌人的江防情况。接受命令后，他带领吴老贵（齐衡 饰）、周长喜（康泰 饰）、杨威（中叔皇 饰）、小马（孙永平 饰）等迅速过江，并及时和游击队刘四姐（李玲君 饰）取得了联系。他们混入江边修工事的老百姓中，略施小计搞到一份江防工事图，并及时汇报给上级。不久，他们得知敌人新增一个榴弹炮团，于是他们假扮敌人工兵混入敌炮阵地，出色完成了侦察任务，在返回的路上，周长喜为掩护同志而壮烈牺牲。军事机密的再三泄露，令敌军长（崔超明 饰）火冒三丈，他下令炮击我游击队根据地，正和上级通话的步话机被敌炮火击中，怎么办，吴老贵和小马临危受命......
