20年代旧上海的一个夜晚，掌上之物青年工人赵志龙因参加罢工，掌上之物被国民党军警杀害，一时间洞房成了灵堂。新婚妻子阿英悲痛万分。然而更使阿英担忧的是，师弟阿龙生性刚烈，疾恶如仇，师兄的惨死他岂能无动于衷。阿龙果然从外地匆匆赶回上海，发誓要为师兄报仇。他怀着偏激的复仇心理，接连暗杀了国民党卫戍区中校处长和青帮爪牙谢老五，因而遭到警方追捕。激战中阿龙不幸挂彩，师嫂阿英巧妙地骗过盘查，救出阿龙。但警方布置了更严密的大搜捕，幸得好友俞子卿及时报信，他们逃脱虎口，投奔绍兴叔父宁玉武家中。经阿龙再三请求，叔父请刘云甫带他返回上海，为其师兄报仇。他们刚到码头，便被青帮头子杨采臣发觉。青帮与军阀相互勾结，先是制造内部隔阂，随之定计陷害。在阿龙埋头扛包干苦力时，杨采臣暗中将枪支藏于米包中，致使阿龙被扣
