充满抱负的，春暖却不得志的漫画家约翰在纽约打拚。因为得知母亲生病的消息，春暖他不得不和怀孕8个月的女友 Rebecca（安娜·肯德里克饰），先后回到那个他一直试图永远逃离的家乡。重返小时成长的城市，他一方面要和许久不见的家人照顾生病的母亲，又要处理好与高中求学时期的爱情竞争对手，热情过度的的前女友的人际关系。随着重新进入自己的家庭，他慢慢发现，不单单是自己面临着工作、爱情、生活上面的困境，自己父亲的小公司面临破产，大哥离婚后依然不断纠缠前妻，母亲的病似乎非常凶险，霍拉斯家的每个人都面临着自己人生的困境，逃无可逃，他们不得不面对这一切问题。
